Personnel:  Principal scientific researcher, Z. KemoklidzeSenior scientific researcher - V. MshvildadzeSenior scientific researcher - T. Korkotadze.

History: The Direction of Terpene compounds separated from the Laboratory of Phytochemistry of the TSMU I. Kutateladze Institute of Pharmacochemistry Institute of Pharmacochemistry  in 2006  as The Laboratory of Triterpene compounds  and Doctor Genry Deanosidze a laureate of the State Prize, was appointed as the head of the new unit. He led the lab - until 2018. Since 2014, the lab has changed its name to The Direction of Terpene compounds and still operates under this name today.

The aim The Direction of Terpene compounds:

Phytochemical study of triterpene (terpene) compounds of native and cultivated potentially medicinal plant raw materials of Georgia for their future therapeutic and preventive use. Study of the Georgian flora and it’s biologically active compounds - terpenes, for their further application in the field of medicine, perfumery and various fields of public use.

Tasks:

Isolation of biologically active extracts, enriched fractions and individual substances from terpene-containing plants.

Obtaining medicinal substances from plants containing terpenes and development of  medications on their basis.

Standardization of developed medicinal substances and medications and the development of their technical documentation.

Scientific directions: Phytochemistry, Pharmacognosy.

Research methodology: Research carried out by the Direction of Terpene compounds compounds is of fundamental and applied nature. It includes the phytochemical study and comparison of different organs of plants of the Georgian flora, their phytochemical characterization, development of active substances on their basis, study of their safety etc., which will allow the creation of new, effective, plant based dosage forms.

Conditions of extraction, fractionation of extract and separation of individual components from plant raw materials are used to optimize phytochemical studies;

Specifically, modern chromatographic (column, low-pressure liquid  and HPLC using various adsorbents, such as silica gel, polyamide, Diaion HP20, sephadex LH20, reversed-phase RP18) and spectral analysis methods such as: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Mass Spectrometry ).

Curriculum: In recent years, the direction of terpene compounds, along with other directions of the Institute of Pharmacochemistry, has been actively involved in the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Tbilisi State Medical University.

Field of Expertise: Research staff The Direction of Terpene compounds often serves as expert consultants for doctoral and master's thesis in the field of pharmacy.

Results:

More than 200 plants of Georgian flora have undergone preliminary phytochemical analysis

12 species were thoroughly studied in respect for triterpene saponin content; More than 100 individual substances were separated and classified; out of these over 30 were of novel structure.

The main results are published in the form of 2 monographs and more than 200 scientific articles. 25 copyrights and patents have been obtained.

Medications:

Cavsuron drops, syrup and tablets - obtained from the leaves of ivy; Characterized by bronchospasmolytic activity, used in the treatment of diseases of the upper respiratory tract

Fatsiflogin - an original, non-steroidal anti-rheumatic drug (tablets) - derived from the triterpene glycosides of the leaves of the Japanese Fatsia, which has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects.

Epicef - a biologically active extract against seizures.

Cyclasit – A substance for the treatment sinusitis, developed from Cyclamen tubers

"PS-551" - a patentable substance.
