Direction of alkaloids

Personnel: Principal scientific researcher N. Vachnadze, Senior scientific researcher L. Kintsurashvili;  Scientific researcher T. SuladzeScientific researcher N. Kachlishvili.

History:  Research in the field of alkaloids started since the establishment of the I.Kutateladze Institute of Pharmacochemistry in 1932.

The goal and objectives of the study:The Direction aim is the phytochemical study of  local, introduced and imported plants of Georgia on the content of alkaloids, and evaluation their biological and pharmacological activities. The following tasks are carried out:

Taking samples of various vegetative organs, investigating morphological-anatomical  structure and determining diagnostic marks

Obtaining sums of alkaloids from the studied samples and separating individual  alkaloids using modern phytotechnologies

Determination of qualitative and quantitative content of alkaloids using modern chromatographic and spectral methods.

Study of the specific biological and pharmacological activities of individual alkaloids and their sums.

Development of modern targeted delivery systems for the obtained substances.

Research is currently underway on various chemical groups of alkaloids.

Study direction: Based on an agreement between TSMU and, I.Kutateladze Institute of Pharmacochemistry bachelor and master students undergo professional training in the field of alkaloid.

Expert and consultation direction: Expertise of scientific works and doctoral theses.

Major outcomes of the study: Most of the separated alkaloids exhibit a wide range of biological and pharmalogical activities: granulocytopoietic, antiarrhythmic activity, improvement of cerebral circulation, apasmolytic and antihistamine activity, antidiabetic activity, cytotoxic and antioxidant alkaloids activity, apoptitic antioxidant and antiradical effects, role of glycoproteins (P-GP)in transmembrane translocation of indole alkaloids and etc.

Publications: Within the last 10 years 95 articles (referenced and peer-reviewed journals) were published;  81  publication in international and national conferences were presented.

The Direction holds  4 – national patents; 7- copyright; 1- monograph.

Throughout the history of the direction 20  Candidate of Sciences, 5 Doctor of Sciences and 2 PhD degrees were obtained.
